Alaska Adventure

New job, new friends, and puppies!

We had a little snow today - nothing that stuck, but snow nonetheless. The high tomorrow is forecast to be around 41.

The past three days have been training days for me. The people here are wonderful - kind, hardworking, adventurous, fun. Most of the staff are returning to HH for the summer. I’m one of only a few new hires. After three days, I understand why so many come back again and again. This is a great place to work.

Yesterday, I submitted my application to be part of the Denali Park Road Lottery. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people visit Denali. Most will spend eight hours or so on a bus trip in the park. In September, a special group of visitors are given the chance to drive the 92-mile Denali Park Road in their own vehicle thru the Denali Road Lottery. The lottery days are the only time personal vehicles are allowed to drive past mile 15 (Savage River). Fingers crossed.

Photos: We had two visitors outside the office this morning. I am working in the office learning about the reservation system. I was taken on a tour of area resorts. Check out the view from one of them. Finally, today, I was able to witness staff rehearsing the summer tour. Everyone gets to hold a puppy, the dogs demonstrate their incredible abilities, and the presenters provide education about, dogs, mushers, and Alaska. One of the many things I learned today is that the puppy snuggling isn’t just for the enormous pleasure it brings the guests, it is a component of socialization for these future athletes who will someday interact with mushers, vets, race personnel, handlers, volunteers, and fans.

From the Husky Homestead website: “This tour is widely heralded as an authentic look into rural lifestyles based on 40 years of Alaskan adventures: from freight hauling on Denali to crossing the finish line in Nome.” Check out the Husky Homestead tour video below, and follow the link to view the Husky Homestead website.

I’m going to go exploring in the area this weekend. There is so much to see! I am still processing swimming lesson registrations for fall, and responding to remote lesson and water safety certificate requests. Feel free to text or email with questions about swimming lessons and/or water safety. Registration is open to everyone for my fall lessons. Thanks for following along.
